A Group Of Climbers On The Summit Of Mount Everest, With The Union Jack Flag Flying In The Foreground. Coronation Everest Jan Morris

In 1953, the world was captivated by the news that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay had become the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest. As part of the expedition, a team of journalists and photographers was tasked with documenting the historic climb. Among them was Jan Morris, a young Welsh writer who later became one of the most acclaimed travel writers and historians of her time.

Morris's account of the expedition, published in 1958 as Coronation Everest, is a classic of mountaineering literature. It is a vivid and suspenseful account of the climbers' journey to the top of the world, as well as a meditation on the challenges and rewards of exploration.

The Climb

Morris begins her narrative with the climbers' arrival in Nepal. From there, they trekked for weeks through the rugged Himalayan foothills, carrying their supplies and equipment on their backs. As they ascended, the air became thinner and the conditions more treacherous. But the climbers pressed on, determined to reach the summit.

On May 28, 1953, Hillary and Norgay finally made it to the top of Everest. Morris and the other journalists were there to witness the historic moment. She described the scene as "one of wild and terrifying beauty."

But Morris's account of the first ascent remains a timeless classic, a reminder of the courage and determination of the men who first conquered the world's highest peak.
