Calculus 401

Limits

A limit is a value that a function approaches as the input approaches a certain value. For example, the limit of the function f(x) = x^2 as x approaches 2 is 4. This means that as x gets closer and closer to 2, the value of f(x) gets closer and closer to 4.

Derivatives

A derivative is a measure of the rate of change of a function. The derivative of a function f(x) with respect to x is denoted by f'(x). The derivative of a function tells you how fast the function is changing at a given point.

For example, the derivative of the function f(x) = x^2 is f'(x) = 2x. This means that the function f(x) is increasing at a rate of 2x at the point x.

Integrals

An integral is a measure of the area under the curve of a function. The integral of a function f(x) from a to b is denoted by ∫[a, b] f(x) dx. The integral of a function tells you the total area under the curve of the function from a to b.

For example, the integral of the function f(x) = x^2 from 0 to 1 is ∫[0, 1] x^2 dx = 1/3. This means that the area under the curve of the function f(x) from 0 to 1 is 1/3.

Calculus 401 is a challenging but rewarding course. By understanding the basic concepts of calculus, you will be able to solve a wide range of problems in science, engineering, and economics.
