Early Life and Career

Joe DiMaggio was born on November 25, 1914, in Martinez, California. He was the eighth of nine children born to Sicilian immigrants Giuseppe and Rosalie DiMaggio. DiMaggio's father was a fisherman, and the family was poor. DiMaggio began playing baseball at a young age, and he quickly showed promise. He signed with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League in 1933, and he helped the team win the league championship in 1935.

In 1936, DiMaggio was signed by the New York Yankees. He made his major league debut on May 3, 1936, and he quickly became one of the most popular players in the game. DiMaggio was a gifted hitter and fielder, and he helped the Yankees win the World Series in his rookie year.

World War II and Later Career

DiMaggio's career was interrupted by World War II. He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945. After the war, DiMaggio returned to the Yankees and helped the team win five more World Series championships. DiMaggio retired from baseball in 1951, and he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.

Personal Life

DiMaggio was married three times. His first marriage, to actress Dorothy Arnold, lasted from 1939 to 1944. His second marriage, to actress Marilyn Monroe, lasted from 1954 to 1955. DiMaggio's third marriage, to Victoria DiMaggio, lasted from 1999 until his death in 1999.

DiMaggio was a private person, and he rarely spoke about his personal life. However, he was known for his loyalty to his friends and family. DiMaggio was also a generous philanthropist, and he donated millions of dollars to charities.

Legacy

Joe DiMaggio is considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He was a gifted hitter and fielder, and he helped the New York Yankees win 10 World Series championships. DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak is still the longest in Major League Baseball history. DiMaggio was also a popular figure off the field, and he was known for his loyalty to his friends and family.
