In the summer of 1972, I had the opportunity to attend training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs. I was a young sportswriter, and this was my first chance to see the inner workings of an NFL team. I was assigned to cover the team's legendary coach, Hank Stram.

Stram was a larger-than-life figure, both physically and personality-wise. He was a big man with a booming voice and a no-nonsense demeanor. But he also had a softer side, and he was always willing to take the time to talk to me, even though I was just a rookie reporter.

I learned a lot from Stram during that training camp. He taught me about the importance of hard work, dedication, and teamwork. He also taught me about the importance of believing in yourself and never giving up on your dreams.

One of the most memorable things that Stram said to me was, "The only way to succeed is to fail." He explained that failure is a necessary part of the learning process. If you're not willing to fail, you'll never learn from your mistakes and you'll never reach your full potential.

Stram's words have stayed with me throughout my life. I've often thought about them when I've faced challenges in my own career. And I've always found them to be true. The only way to succeed is to fail. And the only way to reach your full potential is to never give up on your dreams.

I'm grateful for the opportunity I had to learn from Hank Stram. He was a great coach and a great mentor. He taught me life lessons that I've never forgotten.

Here are some of the specific life lessons that I learned from Hank Stram:

  • The importance of hard work
  • The importance of dedication
  • The importance of teamwork
  • The importance of believing in yourself
  • The importance of never giving up on your dreams
  • The importance of learning from your mistakes
  • The importance of always striving to be your best

These are lessons that I've carried with me throughout my life, and they've helped me to achieve success in my career and in my personal life. I'm grateful to Hank Stram for teaching me these valuable lessons.
