To become board certified in OMS, surgeons must complete a rigorous training program and pass a comprehensive examination. The American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) is the certifying body for OMS surgeons in the United States.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to take the ABOMS certification exam, surgeons must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a graduate of an accredited OMS residency program
  • Have practiced OMS for at least one year

Exam Format

The ABOMS certification exam is a two-day exam that consists of:

  • Ethics and professional responsibility in OMS

The oral exam consists of six cases that the candidate must present to a panel of examiners. The cases cover a variety of OMS procedures, and the candidate is evaluated on their knowledge of the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical techniques for each case.
